Surrey 6 A Side Football Finals

Match report by Max M

Having finished 2nd in the Kingston Borough 6 aside soccer finals, St Mary's went to Woking Leisure Centre to represent the borough in the Surrey final. It was going to be a fantastic honour but also a tough challenge as the best schools in Surrey would be there. Only the team that finished top would go through to the semi Finals. Our first game was against local team Claygate. Russ said it was going to be tough match as they are a well organised side. We started a little nervously and this showed as we were too concerned on defending which invited pressure onto us. At half time Russ told us to be more positive and take the game to them, we did and scored. In the last few moments we switched off and they scored. Tough to take, but a good start. Onto the next game, this was against Wray Common. They were a great side scoring an early goal. We then had to change our game and wake up. We were playing very defensively and had to go on the attack to get the equalizer. It then went down-hill from that point for the rest of the game, conceding another two goals to lose 3-0. Our 3 rd and final game was against The Rayleigh. It kicked off with a 1-0 head start by Ted with a great header (St Mary's header that Russ said we’d never do!). That was the lifting point from the last game. We then sat back and played abit more defensively. But that didn’t work because they kept pressing on us and winning the ball in our own half. So we went back to our normal play, balanced. We went on to score another goal to finally win a game. After a great day of football it was time to go home. We were so proud of the team as we won our last game of football for St Mary’s. Thanks to Russ for helping us develop to the best of our abilities (best P.E. teacher in Surrey!!). Well done saints.
