Borough Football Finals

On Tuesday 13th December St Mary's school football team having qualified top of their group went to CCC to take part in the borough finals. To get to the finals 24 schools entered with only 8 teams reaching the finals, so already a big achievement for the boys.

Our first game was against OLI which we won 2-0, we then played a hard match against St Agatha’s, and having gone behind to a goal we had 2 minutes remaining to rescue the game. Ted M came on and changed the game with real fight and determination, we won 2-1. Amazing!.

Our next game was against Latchmere who are favourites for the tournament. We set off like a steam train taking a 2-0 lead but with minutes remaining we were honest enough to say that we thought the game was over, it wasn’t. They scored 2 goals to make it 2-2. We learnt a lesson that you should never stop until the final whistle.

Next game was against Tolworth; we were beginning to look a bit tired as the games are played back to back with no rest. Hey ho, it’s the same for both teams. It was a scrappy game but we never stopped trying and won the match 2-1.

We then played Christ Church Surbiton winning the match 2-0. Followed by another 2-1 victory over Christ Church New Malden. We were in 1st place with 1 match remaining. All we had to do was draw to become Kingston champions for the 2nd time. We had to play Combe Hill. The nerves were clear to see and also the fatigue of the previous matches. We were giving every last effort to score but it just wasn’t happening for us, lady luck had run out. We lost the game 1-0 which meant we came 2nd to Latchmere (the team we drew with 2-2 )

We were so close but we can hold our heads high as we gave it everything we had and that’s all anyone can do. We now go on to represent Kingston in the Surrey finals to be played on the 25th January at Woking Leisure Centre. Come on you Saints!!!!!!!!
